Professor Duska Rosenberg leads the Information and Communication Systems Research Group at the Royal Holloway University of London and has postgraduate qualifications in Linguistics, Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science from Reading and Brunel Universities. She has extensive experience of collaborative research in Linguistics, Communication and Information and Communications Technologies (ICT), including industry-funded projects, research publications, PhD programmes, and membership of international research groups at the Stanford Centre for the Study of Language and Information (CSLI).  She is a research grant reviewer for EPSRC, as well as the EU and a referee for international journals such as Discourse Processes, Emergence, International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction, CSLI Publications, and others.  Her main research interests are in communication and co-operation in real and virtual environments, and in the impact of advanced ICT on communities and culture.   This includes the methodological framework for the design of spatial interfaces to support remote collaborative activities supported by computer-mediated communication systems.   Duska’s work in this area comprises several collaborative projects, including EU funded projects, notably F4 ACTs CICC project (Collaborative Integrated Communications for Construction).

CICC provided the foundations for the theoretical approach for the study of interaction in co-located, media and virtual environments, which Duska applied in the Framework 5 funded projects SANE and SCALE. These projects strengthened the development of the inter-disciplinary ‘Interaction Space Theory’ and the use of language technology to support argumentation and decision-making activities in interaction spaces.

Subsequently a project, funded by the Leverhulme Foundation, extended the theoretical research to develop scenarios specifically for language technologies, undertaken in collaboration with Stanford University and the multi-disciplinary team of academic researchers and artists in the theatre "Mala Scena" in Zagreb. Industrial Partners included Arup Communications, DEGW, ICL, Philips, Siemens, Balfour Beatty, Fraunhofer, Telefonica, British Telecom, HP Invent.
