Dr. Elizabeth Boyle achieved her Ph. D. from the University of Edinburgh in 1984 on Class and Conditional Reasoning in Children and Adolescents. She worked on the Adaptive Intelligent Dialogue project at the Turing Institute in Glasgow and in the Human Communication Research Centre at Glasgow University studying effective communication.

Since 1992 she has lectured in psychology at the University of the West of Scotland where she is now a Reader. She has taught across a range of modules including cognition and language, child development, psychology and education and psychological theory. Her research interests are in the areas of logical reasoning and critical thinking, communication, achievement motivation, learning styles, dyslexia in higher education and evaluation on which she has made several publications.

More recently she has examined these areas of psychology in the context of e-learning, digital games and social media, on which she has made several publications by way of journals and conference articles, edited books and book chapters.

Dr Boyle has had funding awarded from the UK ESRC, the Wellcome Trust and the European Commission to study aspects of digital games. She was the project coordinator of the EU funded CHERMUG project (CHERMUG.eu), which developed games for research methods and statistics and she has also been a leading contributor to the FP7 GALA (Games and Learning Alliance) Network of Excellence project. Liz is currently supervising two Ph.Ds, one on engagement in digital games and the other on self-presentation on Facebook. Dr Boyle has served the programme committees of various specialist international journals and conferences related to the above and the wider psychology research field.
