Work-flow Responsive Multi-modal Semantic Media Indexing and Retrieval

This was a UK-TSB-funded project which built on the achievements of the UKRC-funded DREAM project (Dynamic Retrieval, Analysis & Semantic Metadata Management)

The Content Safari research programme has had to address the challenges of auto-tagging including graceful semi-automated man-in-the loop semantic-collateral labelling applied to the typically huge search spaces that film production industry practitioners have to deal with in storing, managing and searching through digital media archives to discover a particular media asset of interest at any time. This research programme addresses the multi-modal labelling, search and retrieval of video assets as a workflow-embedded support architecture particularly for creative video production to serve the film, TV and advertising sectors.

2020 3D Media: Spatial Sound and Vision

2020 3D Media will research, develop and demonstrate novel forms of compelling entertainment experiences based on new technologies for the capture, production, networked distribution and display of three-dimensional sound and images. The goal is to explore and develop novel technologies to support the acquisition, coding, editing, networked distribution, and display of stereoscopic and immersive audio-visual content providing novel forms of compelling entertainment at home or in public spaces. The users of the resulting technologies will be both media industry professionals across the current film, TV and ‘new media’ sectors producing programme material as well as the general public.

The media industry knows that astonishing the public is still a route to large audiences and financial success. It is believed that high quality presentation of stereoscopic or immersive images in the home and in public entertainment spaces (such as cinemas) can offer previously unimagined levels of experience. The potential advantages of spatialised stereoscopic or immersive entertainment systems include:

  • Heightened reality and a renewed sense of presence, putting the spectator at the heart of a more exciting experience
  • The ability for the spectator to navigate a virtualized world that has a complete sense of reality
  • The ability to change things in this world once it has been created
  • The ability to repurpose and deploy multi-dimensional content in different contexts

FastMatch

The FastMatch Project directly addresses several of the major security implementation issues facing large enterprises and service providers. Specifically it seeks to create a layered and agent-oriented architecture to enable delivery of multiple pattern-based and behaviour-based scanning and filtering functions at much higher speeds than realised by the state-of-the art.

The major technical objectives are to provide a framework for the concurrent operation of reactive and proactive security algorithms, to deliver algorithmic enhancements for pattern recognition and behaviour-based detection schemes, as well as enhanced and highly correlated rule sets for more efficient alarm management and root-cause analysis. It is important to point out that the tools developed by FastMatch will be robust in the sense that they will seek to constantly adapt and react to changing security threats in the longer term.

Automating Production of Cross Media Content for Multi-Channel Distribution

The AXMEDIS project aims to meet the challenges of the market demand by: (i) reducing costs for content production and management for content composition, representation (format), protection and workflow; (ii) reducing distribution and aggregation costs in order to increase accessibility with a P2P at B2B level, which can integrate content management systems and workflows; (iii) providing new methods and tools for innovative and flexible Digital Rights Management (DRM), including the exploitation of MPEG-21 and overcoming its limitations, and supporting different business and transactions models and multi-channel distribution

The AXMEDIS consortium (consisting of leading European digital content producers, integrators, aggregators, and distributors; and also information technology companies and research groups)  co-operate to produce the AXMEDIS framework to provide innovative methods and tools to speed up and optimise content production, protection and distribution (via different channels including interactive TV i-TV, PC, kiosk, mobile, PDA and others).
